18. 1987-88 New York Knicks

It’s always fun to go back and remember that Rick Pitino was once the head coach of the New York Knicks. It’s great bar trivia. The 1987-88 New York Knicks were a bad playoff team with a 38-44 record, but they were also an exciting one. With a young Patrick Ewing and Mark Jackson, this Knicks team boasted plenty of potential going forward.

The pieces were in place and they got a taste of Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics in the first round. Boston absolutely annihilated New York in the first two games of the series, but the young Knicks managed to bounce back and take Game 3 at home in Madison Square Garden.

It was an excellent learning experience for this team before the Celtics finally finished them off in Game 4. They by all means fit the criteria of a bad playoff team with their losing record but it was the start of a great run for the organization.
