16. 1983-84 Kansas City Kings

The 1983-84 season was a mark of a new beginning for the NBA Playoffs. The eight teams per conference format was put in place and that meant that the road to the NBA Finals got just a bit longer.

It also opened up the potential of some bad teams making the playoffs. The Kansas City Kings were a bad team that year that had just enough talent to get themselves a shot at the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round.

The trio of Eddie Johnson, Larry Drew and Reggie Theus could light up the scoreboard. Even Mike Wooddson was a quality player for the Kings. Still, they were 38-44 and they got swept with ease by the Lakers.

They would only spend one more season in Kansas City after that. They would fail to make the playoffs the following year and the team was off to Sacramento. Surprisingly enough, they made the playoffs in their first year in Sacramento with an even worse record.

While we know the Kings today as a team with plenty of struggles, it’s always interesting to take a look back at the transition between Kansas City and Sacramento and some of the strange years they had as a franchise.
