30 worst NBA playoff teams of all time
15. 1978-79 New Jersey Nets
If there’s a unique stat that Kevin Loughery can be proud of, it’s all the teams with losing records he managed to coach into the playoffs. It’s probably not something that a coach hangs their hat on, but to be able to do it with multiple teams is nothing short of impressive.
The 1978-79 New Jersey Nets managed to sneak into the playoffs with a 37-45 record. Even more impressive is the fact that they lost 15 of their last 20 games on the way to the playoffs after having a winning record at the 62-game mark on the schedule.
Still, this squad led by Bernard King managed to collapse at the worst possible time and it impacted the way they played in the playoffs. The Philadelphia 76ers cruised past them with two straight wins in the playoffs and the Nets were done for.
Phil Jackson only played in 59 games that year for the Nets and it is more or less a fun fact that he was even on that squad. Nonetheless, this team is worthy of making the bad playoff teams list and they’re right in the middle of the pack.
