13. 1985-86 Sacramento Kings

As mentioned before, the Sacramento Kings are certainly the enigma of the NBA. There’s a lot more bad than good and certainly a great deal of heartbreak mixed in. There’s also the vast number of strange playoff appearances to go with it.

After making it into the playoffs with a losing record in Kansas City just a couple of years prior, the Kings had a new home in Sacramento. In their first season in Sacramento, the team managed to make the playoffs.

Somehow, they inexplicably made it with a worse record than the one they had in Kansas City during the 1983-84 season. Instead of the paltry 38-44, this team rolled into the playoffs at 37-45 and rolled right back out.

If things weren’t already weird enough with this Kings team, they weren’t even the worst team in the playoffs that year. That feat belonged to the San Antonio Spurs, which is almost just as weird to think about.

The Kings got the Houston Rockets in the first round and they were swept pretty easily. Houston would go on and make a run at the NBA Finals with Hakeem Olujawon leading the way. Sacramento would follow up their first year of having a team with plenty of losing seasons after.
