6. 1962-63 Detroit Pistons

The 1962-63 Detroit Pistons were a bad playoff team but they’re also one of the most fascinating case studies. Back when three teams from each conference made the playoffs, getting in wasn’t always the easiest task.

However, with less teams meant more opportunities. Certainly, the Pistons took well advantage of their opportunities after starting an incredible 0-7. Yes, this Pistons team led by Bailey Howell and Don Ohl, managed to make the playoffs after losing seven straight to begin the year.

They entered the postseason at 34-46, which mean they went 34-39 after losing the first seven on the year. Detroit would get blown out by the St. Louis Hawks in the first two games on the road but managed to take Game 3 back in Detroit.

They even made Game 4 interesting, but they fell short and they were eliminated. In a way, their playoff run mirrored their regular season. They started off terribly, didn’t quit and managed to almost make something out of it.

Still, this is a bad playoff team. You don’t enter the postseason at 12 games under .500 and not be considered one of the worst ones ever. It definitely speaks to the level of basketball that season in the NBA.
