4. 1987-88 San Antonio Spurs

In 1987, The San Antonio Spurs won the lottery and the right to draft David Robinson. It was a much needed victory after a terrible season the year prior. However, with Robinson still fulfilling his obligations to the United States Navy, and he was not part of the 1987-88 San Antonio Spurs.

Instead, this team went at it with the same cast of characters that went into the playoffs with a losing record a couple of seasons prior. Instead of Cotton Fitzsimmons in charge, Bob Weiss was now the guy calling shots.

Even more incredibly, this team went into the playoffs with a worse record than two years before that and it definitely was one of the worst playoff teams ever. The Spurs finished the season with just a 31-51 record and still somehow managed to make it.

The Western Conference was so bad that a team that finished 20 games under the .500 mark managed to make the playoffs. While that certainly isn’t the best feeling in the world and getting swept by the Los Angeles Lakers came as no surprise, they could hang their hat on the rights to David Robinson.
