Kansas – A new quarterback

Kansas had three quarterbacks throw for 800 or more yards in 2016, none of which threw more touchdowns than interceptions. That will help direct you toward a 2-10 in any given season. One of those signal-callers is back, though — Carter Stanley.

While Stanley may be the favorite due to experience in the Jayhawk system, he faced competition throughout the spring. This came from JUCO transfer Peyton Bender, who KansasCity.com describes as someone with a “quick release and stronger arm” than Stanley. Bender looked better in the spring game, too, throwing for 143 yards, 11 for 15 passing and two touchdowns, compared to Stanley’s 114 yards on 13 for 24 passing.

Based on numbers and scouting report, this should be Bender’s job to lose. Stanley represents the poor play that was seen from the Kansas offense in 2016 but also has more time under the system, which could play in his favor.

The quarterback situation for Kansas should be an interesting one to follow with their spring game over. Bender represents a new direction for the team, something needed after last year’s latest disaster. Will the coaching staff trend in his favor/
