8. Shaquille O’Neal, 2000 NBA Finals Game 1

Shaquille O’Neal’s first NBA Finals appearance came in 1995 as a member of the Orlando Magic. He was outplayed by Hakeem Olajuwon and the Houston Rockets swept the Magic to capture back-to-back titles. One year later, O’Neal signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency with hopes of restoring the fortune of the hallowed franchise. More importantly, he wanted redemption.

At the turn of the millennium, Shaq was at the height of his powers. During the 1999-00 season, he averaged 29.7 points, 13.6 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game. Powered by Shaq and a young Kobe Bryant, the Lakers posted the league’s best record, going 67-15 that year. The gaudy individual numbers coupled with the team’s excellence, delivered Shaq his lone NBA MVP award. But questions remained about his ability to win on the big stage.

The Lakers defeated the Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns, and Portland Trail Blazers on their way to the NBA Finals where they would face the Indiana Pacers. Shaq was back in the Finals and on a mission to rid himself of the bitter taste of being swept five years earlier. The Pacers’ starting frontcourt of Rik Smits and Dale Davis proved to be no match for the brute strength of O’Neal.

In Game 1, Shaq feasted on the helpless Pacers’ defenders. The Lakers identified the mismatch and relentlessly exploited it throughout the game. Shaq scored 43 points on 21-31 shooting. He also grabbed 19 boards and swatted 3 shots in 44 minutes of action. His play carried the Lakers to a 17-point win and ultimately the NBA crown. Shaq averaged 38 points and 16.7 rebounds to capture Finals MVP. It’s one of the greatest overall performances ever in the Finals.
