The legendary Al Pacino turns 77 today, and in honor of his birthday, we’ve come up with this list of his five best films to date.

Al Pacino is a legend — he’s one of the greatest actors of all time, and he’s created some of the most iconic roles in pop culture. He’s also an accomplished stage actor, having won two Tony awards over the course of his career. Amazingly, he’s only won one Oscar in his lifetime: a Best Actor Oscar for his role in Scent of a Woman.

Today, Al Pacino isn’t as much in front of the camera as he is behind it, serving as the joint president of the Actor’s Studio with Ellen Burstyn and Harvey Keitel. But before that, he starred in a series of roles that cemented his place in the pop culture zeitgeist.

So we decided to take a look at his five best movies (and this was no small task, to be sure!). Whether he’s playing the role of an Italian gangster, a Cuban immigrant or a crusading cop, Al Pacino has brought characters to life that will stand the test of time. Here, without further ado, are the five best Al Pacino films.
