There are certain Philadelphia sports fans who would have been happy swilling beer in the upper deck of Veterans Stadium until the end of time. Most, however, realized the rat-infested concrete bowl was way past its prime. Citizen’s Bank Park could not be further from the soulless Vet.
Offering views of the Philadelphia skyline, CBP is one of the nicer new ballparks in the league. It is located adjacent to the Eagles stadium and the arena for the Sixers and Flyers. Philadelphia is one of the few cities in the country that still uses the multi-sport site and parking lot approach, but it works because Ashburn Alley gives fans options for entertainment and eats before the game.
Ashburn Alley is named for Phillies legend Richie Ashburn who patrolled center field for years and laid down bunts into the overgrown grass at Shibe Field. There are dozens of local restaurants located behind left and center field, as well as activities for the younger fans. Have a cheesesteak and grab some crab fries from Chickies and Pete’s to get the full Philadelphia experience.
The brick facades of Citizens Bank Park are adorned with old-time lettering and ornamentation. These can be hard to spot with the untrained eye, and are not necessarily a focal point, but are a throwback to the old Shibe Park, which will be touched on later in this list. Citizens Bank Park would rank much higher on the list of all-time great stadiums if it were located closer to the heart of the city.
