NBA Free Agency 2017: 5 offseason needs for the Philadelphia 76ers
By John Buhler
4. Catch-and-shoot guy at the two
With most of their lottery picks these last few years, the 76ers have gone with bigs to stack their frontcourt. While Ben Simmons is technically a forward, he projects as a primary ball handler in that Magic Johnson/Giannis Antetokounmpo sort of prototype. In short, let’s just call Simmons a point guard for the sake of simplicity.
Though Robert Covington has been a solid find on wing (who doesn’t love everything about Nik Stauskas?) it would be advantageous for the 76ers to grab another catch-and-shoot player that they can put out on the wing.
Philadelphia finished dead last in offensive efficiency. Though the 76ers took the seventh-most 3-point attempts, only 34 percent of them went in. That was 25th best in the NBA. For the up-tempo pace that Brown wants his team to play at, this inefficiency from beyond the arc is a tad problematic.
Could the 76ers be in the market for an aging three-point star like Kyle Korea or J.J. Redick? If having more than one guy on their roster over 30 terrifies them, Bojan Bogdanovic, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope or Tim Hardaway Jr. could be in play. These three are still either in their primes on still potentially on the come-up. Philadelphia could have interest in them out on the wing to help in the perimeter offensive game.
