Second Round

45

Adam Shaheen

Tight End, Ashland Eagles

Again, the Bears kind of panicked here. Have you ever heard of the Ashland Eagles or their tight end Adam Shaheen? Unless you grew up in Ohio, probably not. The second round of the 2017 NFL featured a small tight end run of sorts. The Bears did trade back with the Cardinals to draft Shaheen at No. 45, but a guy from a bigger school might have made the Chicago media happier.

This was a pick that the Bears could have gone in any number of directions. It’s not like Pace and Fox’s team is anywhere close to being championship caliber. Not to say that the Bears needed to go with the best player available at No. 45, but maybe a guy that played at a Power 5 school Chicagoans have heard of would have saved this strange draft by the Bears.

If Shaheen is stout in run blocking and pass caching, he could be tremendously valuable in the Bears offense. It looks to be one predicated on pounding the rock with a second-year tailback out of Indiana, Jordan Howard. Maybe the Bears think that Shaheen could help bring along either Glennon or Trubisky in the 2017 passing game?

At least the Bears didn’t trade up to get Shaheen. That would have not played well in the agitated Chicago media. This is a deep tight end draft, so maybe the Bears did find someone special at No. 45 in Shaheen. What if the move back was done just to get Gerald Everett out of South Alabama? That would have been terribly awkward, as he went No. 44 to the Los Angeles Chargers. Another strange pick by the Bears nonetheless.
