30 highest career MLB salaries
7. Mark Teixeira, $213,025,000
While Teixeira doesn’t have the overall Hall of Fame-worthy numbers that the rest of the $200 million club owns, he provided plenty of value earlier on in his career.
The Rangers selected Teixeira fifth overall in the 2001 MLB draft and got his financial career off to a good start with a $9.5 major league contract right out of college Teixeira debuted with Texas in 2003 and quickly became one of the beft all-around first basemen in the Majors.
Following a trade to Atalanta on 2007, Teixeira enjoyed his best overall season the next year between the Braves and Angels with 6.9 WAR to become a highly sought-after free agent. In December of 2008, the Yankees offered Teixeira an eight-year, $184 million deal to ensure his place as one of the highest earners in MLB history.
New York won the 2009 World Series with Teixeira chipping in a solid 5.1 WAR to finish second in the MVP voting. While hasn’t enjoyed that strong of a season since, his contract has been far from a disaster, as he posted largely above-average numbers at the plate before retiring due to various injuries at the end of 2016.
The deal officially came off the books with Teixeira’s retirement, but he should hold on to a top 10 spot for at least a couple more seasons.
