Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho got WWE Payback started with a battle for the United States Championship.

The bitter rivalry between these two boiled over quickly as Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho wasted no time at all going after each other as WWE Payback got started. What started off as some back and forth up against the ropes, quickly turned to Owens’ advantage on the outside.

Owens hit Jericho with his vintage cannonball on the outside early, as the ref quickly counted. The former world champion was able to get back in the ring and break the count. There was no time for Jericho to recoup however.

The United States Champion jumped back on him, as the crowd tried to will Jericho on. The vicious kicks from Owens to the back of Jericho’s head kept him on top. The match stayed on the ground, as Owens maintained a side headlock.

As Jericho once again rolled back in before being counted out, Owens continued to decimate his former friend. Finally, Jericho started to show a little life with some chops and a nice shot off the top rope.

The rage began to take over, as Jericho struck Owens with chop after chop in the corner. His fate would continue to stall however, as a kick to the head caught him. Owens would prop Jericho up for another cannonball in the corner as he continued to get frustrated with his inability to put Jericho away.

With frustration setting in and getting the better of Owens, Jericho was able to put his former best friend in the Walls of Jericho. A finger would be all Owens could manage to get on the rope, as Jericho was forced to break the hold.

That finger would come back to bite Owens, as he rolled outside. With Owens’ caught behind the steel steps, the man from Winnipeg kicked the steps to inflict more pain. As the latter continued to focus on his injured hand, Jericho put him in the Walls of Jericho once again.

As the crowd in San Jose roared on, Owens tapped and Jericho won the United States Championship and a spot on the SmackDown Live roster.
