19. Chicago White Sox (Home)

The Chicago White Sox have a long and winding uniform history, and though they’ve made several missteps along the way, the club has one of the best uniform sets in the major leagues today.

An original member of the American League in 1901, the White Sox used several versions of the letter C, before developing one of the greatest logos of all time in 1912 – a large S with an O and an X fit into the negative space inside the larger letter. However, the first “Sox” logo was eventually discontinued.

However, in 1949, a new Sox logo was developed in which the three letters were interlocked. At the same time, the club adopted black as its primary color after decades of navy blue or red. It took several different forms: black on white, black outlined in red on black pinstripes, navy blue, a lighter shade of blue and no pinstripes, and finally red pinstripes.

The franchise apparently loved the look, but couldn’t settle on the right color combination, and eventually moved on to other things. An old-school style navy and white from 1976-81 (during which the White Sox experimented with wearing shorts). In 1982, the team introduced modern “SOX” lettering and “batterman” logo, which remained popular enough that the team brought it back into the mix in 2014 and wears as an alternate uniform today.

Though the White Sox played around with various colors and uniform designs throughout the 1970s and 1980s, most of which involved red and various shades of blue (including one of the most underrated uniforms in team history, which the team wore from 1987-90), black returned in the 1991 and has thankfully never left again.
