Who directed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? We give you the details on the man responsible for helming Marvel’s latest blockbuster film.

When Marvel‘s highly anticipated sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 blasts into movie theaters this Friday, fans will know more about Star-Lord, Groot and their whole band of superheroes. But you may not know a lot about the man responsible for overseeing their adventure.

Who directed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? That would be James Gunn, who is returning to the franchise after directing 2014’s massive success Guardians of the Galaxy.

You’ve also heard his name in the horror headlines recently because in-between Marvel projects, Gunn also directed the recent release The Belko Experiment, starring John Gallagher Jr. and Tony Goldwyn as office workers trapped in their building and forced to fight for their lives.

And in the completely opposite direction, we can also thank James Gunn for writing 2002’s live action version of Scooby-Doo and its 2004 sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. So he has experience with taking known and beloved properties to the big screen.

Gunn’s history with Marvel Studios goes back in 2013, when he was the uncredited director of the scene that appeared in the middle of the credits of Thor sequel Thor: The Dark World.

He also told Entertainment Weekly that he directed three of Stan Lee’s now-standard cameo scenes for Marvel movies, including 2016’s Doctor Strange.

And Gunn is attached as an executive producer to next year’s Avengers: Infinity War.

But it’s Guardians of the Galaxy that is James Gunn’s baby — a property that he’s not leaving any time soon. Gunn surprised fans last month when he posted on Facebook confirming that he’ll be back as both director and writer for the already-planned Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
