NBA Free Agency 2017: 5 offseason needs for the Los Angeles Clippers
By Jason Klaer
3. Moving on from Blake Griffin
One could argue Blake Griffin helped blaze a trail of success with the Clippers. Before drafting him No. 1 overall in the 2009 NBA Draft, Los Angeles had not made the playoffs since the 2005-06 season and were greatly overshadowed by its roommates at the Staples Center, the Lakers. Since Griffin entered his first season, the Clippers have made the playoffs six times and won two Pacific Division titles. His explosive dunks and mesmerizing blocks have put fans over the edge for the past handful of seasons. However, its time the Clippers move on. Griffin’s rocky health poses a problem for a franchise struggling to compete in the playoffs.
From his knees to feet, Griffin is a risk to say the least. Surely some franchise will want to start fresh with the five-time All-Star. His injuries tend to occur at the most crucial times of the season. After Griffin was ruled out for the rest of the playoffs, the Clippers went 1-3 in the series.
Cutting their losses and moving on is the best option for the Clippers. Despite the success, Griffin’s career has carried a nasty injury bug at the worst possible time. In the meantime, searching for a big man who can score but at a more reasonable should be one goal for Los Angeles.
