Superman has struck again at the Rogers Centre to keep the Blue Jays in front.

Cleveland Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez thought he’d hit for extra bases in the sixth inning on Monday, until Toronto Blue Jays center fielder Kevin Pillar dived for an astonishing catch near the warning track. Ramirez lined Marcus Stroman’s pitch deep into center field with two outs, with a shot that looked like it would drive in at least one, if not two, runs.

Ramirez came to the plate with Edwin Encarnacion on first and Carlos Santana on third, hoping to erase some of the Blue Jays’ 4-0 lead. In fairness, it’s hard to hit it much better than that, without getting it over the fence, but it’s also hard to get any ball past Pillar.

The Jays, opening this three-game home series with Cleveland, are hoping to hang on to this lead, as their 11-20 start to the season has them well at the bottom of the AL East. The Indians have started the season a little better, currently 17-13 and atop the AL Central.

The two clubs have plenty of recent history between them, with Cleveland eliminating the Blue Jays in last year’s ALCS. This Jays’ home stand is sure to be an emotional one, with Toronto’s former slugger Encarnacion making his first return to the Rogers Centre since signing with the Indians.

Even though Pillar bailed him out, Stroman’s night ended with Ramirez’s hard hit to center. Manager John Gibbons opted to go to his bullpen after Stroman went six innings, surrendering six hits and striking out one.

Pillar has a reputation for making catches like these, earning him the nickname “Superman” among Toronto fans. He’s been nominated for the AL Gold Glove Award twice, although he’s been beaten both times by Kevin Kiermaier of the Tampa Bay Rays.
