3. San Antonio

The prospect of having a third team in Texas may not sit well with Cowboys’ owner (and noted league-wide action influencer) Jerry Jones, as the refrain “what Jerry wants, Jerry gets” has become common. But it’s no coincidence Raiders’ owner Mark Davis was interested in San Antonio for relocation at an early point in his tug of war with the city of Oakland, and the city has a facility (the Alamodome) that can house an NFL team immediately.

Football is the lifeblood sport in Texas, and there’s seemingly always room for more to quench that appetite. The fact the NFL went back to Houston fairly quickly in 2002 after Oilers moved to Tennessee, with the expansion Texans, points to that clearly. San Antonio is far enough away from Dallas and Houston geographically to foster and maintain a fan base’s interest, and an expansion NFL team would seem to fit nicely alongside the long run of success the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs have enjoyed.

The NFL could show favor for what they know in search of future expansion locations. The state of Texas is that kind of known quantity in many ways, and San Antonio is a location that has not been fully tapped into.
