Derek Jeter: 5 best moments of career
3. “Mr. November”
November 1, 2001
Many of Jeter’s greatest moments happened in October, which added to his legend. Jeter starred in the postseason from the very beginning, hitting .412/.412/.471 in four games in the 1996 ALDS following his rookie season. He hit his first postseason home run – a controversial one – in the ‘96 ALCS, when a fan reached over the right field wall to snag Jeter’s fly ball. Had today’s instant replay process been in place then, Jeter would have had at least one fewer postseason homer.
Overall, Jeter hit .308/.374/.465 with 20 home runs, 61 RBI, 18 stolen bases and 111 runs scored in 158 career postseason games. In the World Series, he posted a .321/.384/.449 slash with three home runs, nine RBI and 32 runs scored in 38 games.
Prior 2001, there had never been a World Series game played in the month of November. However, it was necessary following the terrorist attacks of September 11, which delayed the postseason one week.
With New York down 2-1 in the series heading into Game 4 on October 31, the Yankees and Diamondbacks were tied 3-3 in the bottom of the tenth inning. Shortly after the clock struck midnight in New York, signaling the end of October and the beginning of November, Derek Jeter strode to the plate to face Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Byung-Hyun Kim. On a 3-2 pitch, Jeter connected for an opposite-field home run, his third and final home run in the Fall Classic and his only walk-off homer in the World Series.
Though Jeter’s long ball tied the series, the D-Backs walked off in Game 7. Jeter would have to wait until 2009 to win another World Series.
