4. Acquire Chris Archer

Stop me if you have heard this one before: the Cubs should acquire Chris Archer. You have heard it? Well, too bad. I am going to state my case anyway. Do you want championships, because this is how you get championships.

The young Archer would a magnificent addition to the older Cubs’ staff. In combination with Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks, Archer adds a slightly higher velocity fastball to the mix of power and finesse of the current rotation. And, to this point, he is performing better than in 2016, allowing only 3.07 runs per 9 innings. Much improved over the 4.47 he posted last year.

For the Cubs, it would take a good player in the swap, but the wide variety of needs for the Tampa Bay Rays allowed for several possibilities. The Rays are likely to build around Evan Longoria and Logan Morrison in the infield. There are assets in the Cubs system that are attractive to other teams. Sure, Ian Happ is sitting there, but his versatility makes him someone to hold. But, the speedy Chesny Young would be an solid option for shortstop. If you add in Tommy La Stella, the Rays receive a MLB hitter and a prospect that will challenge for big league time soon.

However, that may not be enough. The Rays may also ask for an outfielder? Could the Cubs let Eloy Jimenez go? No. But, with Albert Almora starting to produce, Jon Jay will look for more playing time. Time in Tampa Bay for Jay will provide everyday playing opportunities on an inexpensive expiring contract.
