4. Trade for a star outfielder

When the Cardinals began suffering injuries to their outfield, many were shocked when they called up Magneuris Sierra, who hadn’t played outside of Class A baseball in the minors at that point in time. Although Sierra has held his own so far in the majors, St. Louis needs a huge upgrade to their third outfielder. Once Piscotty and Fowler are healthy, the Cardinals have a nice combination between them, but Randall Grichuk still needs more time to develop before he can truly be relied on to hold the LF position down.

Going all in and acquiring a veteran outfielder could really help their cause in dethroning the Cubs, and potentially reaching the world series. Piscotty could potentially shift over to LF, and the Cardinals can go all in and try to acquire Carlos Gonzalez from the Colorado Rockies. Although Gonzalez is off to a slow start this season, he has been one of the best hitters in baseball, usually hitting for power and a high average.

Gonzalez would essentially be a rental since he is set to become a free agent after this season, but the Cardinals have a good enough farm system to pull off a trade of this magnitude if they wanted to. The Rockies have been known to be shopping Gonzalez in the past, and they may be willing to deal him if they fear he won’t resign. It would still cost the Cardinals a pretty penny to acquire him, but it would instantly put them in the conversation of the potential contenders in the National League.
