Jinder Mahal and Randy Orton battled for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of Backlash on Sunday night.

With the biggest prize on the line in the main event of Backlash on Sunday night, Jinder Mahal and Randy Orton wasted no time with the stare downs before the match began. Before the bell even rung, frustration boiled over for Orton.

Losing his temper, Orton attacked Mahal and beat him down on the outside. The ref asked Mahal if he wanted to continue the match with the Sing Brothers looking on concerned. With the bell finally ringing, Orton got back to beating up Mahal.

Orton went for an early RKO and tried to end it early, but Mahal was able to roll outside. Still, Orton was all over his opponent on the outside and gave him no room to breathe. The Singh Brothers tried to get involved as best they could, but were kept to the outside by the ref.

Mahal finally got a little offense in by targeting the shoulders of Orton. The number one contender really worked the shoulders on the inside as he tried to regain his composure. Targeting Orton’s shoulders allowed Mahal to open up some offense.

It didn’t last long as the champ got back to his feet and continued to hammer away on Mahal with some European uppercuts. It would turn into a little back and forth between the two, as Mahal went back to work on the shoulder of Orton.

The two would return to the announce table where they fought before the bell rung. Mahal would learn from his previous encounter outside and brought his adversary quickly back into the ring. Once again, the Maharaja continued to work on the shoulders.

Having had enough of his shoulder being targeted, Orton landed a major superplex on Mahal. Both competitors tried to make it to their feet in Chicago. A pin attempt failed as he couldn’t get a complete pin going.

Orton landed a successful ddt off the ropes on Mahal despite the pain in his left arm. Feeling the end near, Orton set up for the RKO. Instinctively, the fallen contender rolled out of the ring while the Singh Brothers confronted Orton. Having enough of the two, Orton took down both of them.

Mahal tried to jump on Orton but took an RKO for his troubles and it appeared the match was over. Instead, the two brothers ripped their leader out of the ring before he could be pinned and the champion sent both flying over the announce table.

As Randy Orton set up the moment of the night by giving a double ddt to the brothers, Mahal caught Orton with the Khallas. The ref counted to three and Mahal pulled off arguably one of the biggest upsets in WWE history to become the brand new cahmpion.
