Top 25 MLB batting seasons of all time
24. Frank Robinson, 1966
- The Numbers: Won AL Triple Crown and MVP, .316/.410/.637, 49 homers, 122 RBI, slugged .857 in World Series and won MVP
In 1966, MLB had still not lowered the mound, making the league very pitcher-friendly. That could not stop Robinson, and his Triple Crown is one of the more impressive feats in baseball history given the environment in the league at the time.
Robinson’s first season with the Baltimore Orioles could not have gone any better. He led the league in nine major offensive categories in addition to the three main Triple Crown statistics. Robinson produced career-highs in home runs, slugging, and OPS on his way to the AL MVP.
The great season continued into the World Series. Robinson led the Orioles to a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers. In four games, he had three extra-base hits. The Orioles went to the World Series four times in Robinson’s six years with the franchise. The trade that sent Robinson to Baltimore for Milt Pappas will forever be remembered as one of the most lopsided in MLB history. Robinson went into the Hall of Fame wearing an Orioles hat in 1982.
