5 times Manu Ginobili made us believe in miracles
1. Batman
Manu Ginobili has had countless moments and great performances throughout his career. From the 39 points that he dropped on the Seattle Supersonics in the 2005 Western Conference Semifinals and the 44 point outing against Minnesota to leading his native Argentina to a victory over Team USA in the 2004 Olympics, we unfortunately have to narrow things down to just one more.
In 2009 the Spurs played the struggling Kings. San Antonio, in classic Spurs fashion dominated and came up with the win. However, the real action didn’t come from any of the players. It came from an unwelcome visitor.
Late in the first quarter, a bat had checked into the game and appeared to be having the time of his life. I mean what bat wouldn’t relish the opportunity to perform in front of upwards of 18,000 screaming fans by doing various aerial displays. The fans, both frightened and entertained were aware of the fact that they were witnessing history.
With players and fans alike “hitting the deck,” The Spurs Coyote had attempted to remove the threat by donning a fishing net, ready to strike at any second. However, the bat was too smart and continued his dominance over the area.
However, this was the bat’s unlucky day. Manu Ginobili was waiting for him and ready to take the situation into his own hands. And that’s exactly what he did.
With a left hand, Manu sent the dazed bat into a crash landing. The threat was over, except to Ginobili who got a rabies shot a few days later. Ginobili later expressed regret in viciously assaulting the bat noting that they are an intricate part of our ecosystem.
