3. Mike Moustakas, Kansas City Royals

After losing most of 2016 to injury, Moustakas has 10 home runs, 22 RBI and 20 runs scored so far this season. A rain out on Saturday and a subsequent double header Sunday against the Minnesota Twins limited Moustakas’ participation over the weekend, but he is not known to be dealing with an injury.

As with a few of his notable Royals’ teammates, Moustakas will be a free agent after this season. Kansas City is 5.5 games out of first place in AL Central going into Monday, with a 18-25 record, but they are not nessarily out of the race yet. If a move up the standings doesn’t start to happen soon though, general manager Dayton Moore will have to consider getting something for players that may leave for nothing in free agency next winter.

Third baseman are not necessarily in great demand at the trade deadline. But those with one to part with are getting lucky this year, with the Red Sox having a need and likely willing to pay a fair premium in assets to secure a solid option. The Royals could accelerate a re-set of their roster by shipping “Moose” to Boston, and the Red Sox don’t have to make a long-term commitment.
