No. 12: Leprechaun of Notre Dame

Name of Show: Blitz Me, I’m Irish

Network: NBC

Voiceover By: Patrick Stewart

Blitz Me, I’m Irish tells the story of a closet leprechaun, who’s trying to fit in with his peers, who are star football players in high school. Though small in size with a lack of hand-eye coordination, Patty wants nothing more than a shot to play under the lights on Friday night. But there’s a problem: he doesn’t come from a family of athletes. Just a few months before his high school’s first football game, Patty lived in Ireland, where he helped out on his family’s potato farm.

If there’s anything Patty can attribute to himself, then it’s his years of exposure to physically demanding work. Then again, he’s 5-foot-7 frame may paint a target on his back during football tryouts. Because of his size, Patty feels it’s best if he gives the running back position a chance. Unfortunately, he’s never taken a hard hit, so the aggression by the other football players is a total shock to him.

Throughout the series, Patty will undergo a lot of scrutiny from his coaches to his teammates. Blitz Me, I’m Irish is just a spin-off of what the movie Rudy provided, but with less sentiment. Sure, it’s about trial and error, but there are hints of comedy, a quality that Patty practices in in order to get him through the process. There’s also less demand to land on a team, though it’s clearly a personal journey. Nevertheless, the series would be a guilty pleasure more than anything.
