No. 9: Reveille of Texas A&M

Name of Show: Wake Up to Reveille

Network: PBS

Voiceover By: Meryl Streep

Wake Up to Reveille would be a staple to any kid’s Saturday morning. It’s about a border collie, who lives in a small Texas town, that has everything in life. That “everything” includes being the puppy to a happy-go-lucky family, who does nothing but love Reveille unconditionally. The show also revolves around — you guessed it — the immeasurable bond between man and man’s best friend.

Even though Reveille is always in a crowd of people, she has her own independence in Wake Up to Reveille. She’s always looking forward to a stroll around town square and she doesn’t mind getting lost every now and then. To her, all of what happens to her is just a part of the experience — whether it’s by herself or with a group of close canine buddies.

Think of Wake Up to Reveille as Clifford the Big Red Dog, a series that PBS would handle for just a couple of years. That show was fairly popular with the younger crowd and it did well. Unfortunately, John Ritter, the voice of Clifford, passed away in 2003. After that news broke out, the TV series came to a close.

For the role to excel, the voice behind Reveille will have to be someone who’s personable and down-to-Earth. Honestly, there’s no candidate better than Meryl Streep, who has previous voiceover experience thanks to Fantastic Mr. Fox. There’s just an element to how Streep conducts herself and the way she sounds that elicit good vibes. Reveille, the mascot at Texas A&M, has the same charm going for her. She’s probably the most easy going of all Division I mascots.
