Chelsea: Stefan Savic

It’s hard to find something Chelsea did wrong this year. They buttoned up the league with plenty of time to spare after Antonio Conte revitalized a squad that finished mid-table in 2015-16. The new champions deserve almost every plaudit that has been showered upon them by the public and analysts that mocked them just a year ago.

But looking into the future, things get a little less rosy. Chelsea will be re-entering European competition next year. They’ll have a heard time living up to the same bar they’ve set for themselves domestically when they also have to grapple with the Champions League.

So adding depth to an already solid team is just what the Blues need to make sure they can live up to the hype. Atletico Madrid’s Stefan Savic would bolster their backline in an exceptional way.

He’s been part of a defense that allowed 26 goals, the fewest in La Liga, last season. Just a reminder: that’s a league with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar. Savic is one of the most efficient and energetic players on one of Europe’s best defenses.

Savic is also still young enough to be worth an investment at 26. Chelsea are back among Europe’s best now, and they’ll need a squad to compete right away. That means signing players that can move right into the starting XI without disrupting the balance Antonio Conte has found. Savic would be a perfect fit.
