MLB trade rumors: 5 potential new homes for Giancarlo Stanton
3. Texas Rangers
Even with a new climate-controlled stadium on the way, Texas figures to be an outstanding place for power hitters for the next 10 years of Giancarlo Stanton’s career. Never short on young, potent bats thanks to their ability to mine talent in Latin America, the Rangers would offer Stanton the chance to be part of a dominant lineup for the remainder of his career.
The Rangers could build one of the best raw-power duos in baseball with Stanton and Joey Gallo. Tons of strikeouts — sure. Tons of 450-foot moonshots? Definitely. It would not seem like a tough sell to get Stanton to waive his no-trade clause to head to Texas.
The tougher sell may be the Rangers. A Stanton-to-Texas trade would likely begin with the Marlins asking for young phenom Nomar Mazara, who just turned 22 at the beginning of the 2017 season and already has 26 MLB home runs. He has the potential to develop into a perennial All-Star and has a refined approach at the plate for such a young hitter.
A Stanton-for-Mazara deal is not likely to move the needle for the Rangers — not with Stanton under contract past his age-35 season. That is a long time to commit to a player with a skill profile that does not seem destined to translate well into his mid-30s. Mazara still has untapped upside. The Rangers would initially be in on Stanton, but talks should shut off when Mazara’s name comes up.
