1. Los Angeles Dodgers

With his full no-trade clause in place, Stanton will be directly involved in determining where he lands if the Marlins decide to trade him. He was born and raised in the Los Angeles area and remains involved with his high school’s baseball program. The Dodgers would be at the top of the list for Stanton if he is going to leave Miami.

The Dodgers are one of the few teams in baseball able to absorb most of a $325 million contract that could run through 2027. It does not appear likely that Stanton will use his opt-out in 2020 because he is already guaranteed $183 million for his age-31 to age-36 seasons. He’s not getting a better deal than that on the open market.

Los Angeles will be looking for a star outfielder at some point in the future. Cody Bellinger’s future is at first base. Yasiel Puig continues to disappoint, and his OPS has nearly fallen below .700 this season. The issues Joc Pederson has had with making consistent contact continue to plague him. He is not the five-tool star the scouting reports projected.

Stanton fits with the Dodgers, and it is not a huge stretch to assume he would welcome a trade back to his home city. With one of the top farm systems in baseball, the Dodgers would be able to offer more than enough to pry Stanton away from the Marlins. More attractive than prospects, however, is the Dodgers’ ability to take on the massive contract without asking the Marlins to pitch in. If a trade is going to happen, the Dodgers seem the most likely new home for Giancarlo Stanton.
