30 goofiest mascots in college sports
17. Herky the Hawk
Do you ever wonder what it would look like if a mascot had a perpetual look of getting kicked in the groin on his face? Look no further than Herky the Hawk. The beloved Hawkeyes mascot has been a mainstay in the Big Ten for some time.
However, this bird that is in serious need of some tweezers and a better attitude certainly has a goofy look. Just look at that grimace with his teeth sticking out of his beak. He looks in pain and someone should help him.
There’s trying to have a mean face and act intimidating and then there is just trying to fake it until you make it. That’s the story of Herky here. He’s clearly trying to fake that edge to get by and it just isn’t working at all.
The Hawkeyes have one of the best logos and color schemes in all of college. Why can’t their mascot match the bravado the program carries itself with? Maybe if they soften up the eyebrows a tad, it would help.
Another subtle change could be not having a close beak. Maybe show off that smile a little more and it could help the perception that this bird is a little happier or has a little more anger behind it. It’s not a major fix, but just a slight adjustment needed.
