7. Big Al

When it comes to bragging rights and being able to look down their nose at everyone, Big Al certainly has earned that. Well it’s more like looking down a trunk for him as college’s most popular elephant.

Al walks tall as his program does and his flimsy costume that shakes around like a broken down McDonald’s ice cream machine adds to the mystique. With the Crimson Tide playing for a championship seemingly almost every year, football fans have become accustomed to seeing him all over the field.

The sheer size of an elephant makes any costume hard to pull off for a mascot but Big Al does it as well as anyone possibly could. The lack of tusks keeps him from looking like a more fierce elephant but perhaps poachers got to him a long time ago.

Having “Big” in his name is also an interesting touch. No one in their right mind would certainly think an elephant was going to be small by any sense of the word. Nonetheless, it’s a bold reminder from a bold program.

Trying to stop Alabama is pretty much like trying to stop an elephant. There are plenty of goofy mascots in the SEC, but Big Al is the crown jewel for the time being. Just don’t throw any peanuts at him.
