Isaiah Hartenstein

C, Zalgiris

The centers that make an impact in the modern NBA are versatile on at least one end of the floor. The best defensive centers can protect the rim and hedge hard enough on guards to defend the perimeter for short stretches. The best offensive centers can play an inside-out game that is as much perimeter focused as it is built around posting up. Zalgiris big man Isaiah Hartenstein falls in the second category and given what the Brooklyn Nets have done with Brook Lopez, he should fit nicely at the Barclays Center.

Hartenstein’s offensive game is more reminiscent of a guard than a center. He is perimeter focused and capable of attacking of the dribble in a way that few other 7-footers can. The 19-year old is comfortable driving to the hoop and can even pass on the move a bit, although his decision-making is a work in progress. The key to Hartenstein’s development will be his 3-point shot. He’s already a capable shooter, hoisting plenty of attempts, but his accuracy needs to improve for the shot to be a more viable threat.

On defense, Hartenstein lacks the length to be an elite rim protector, but he does have solid lateral mobility, which should allow him to at least be competent in a limited role. The Oregon-born 7-footer is still a developing project, but his offensive game is worthy of a first round pick.
