During his time with the Milwaukee Bucks, new Orlando Magic general manager John Hammond showed a preference for length, athleticism and high character prospects. That could lead the new man in charge to take a swing at Florida State’s Jonathan Isaac with the No. 6 pick. Isaac certainly fits the profile and his high floor as a defensive stopper is a great justification for taking him this high.
At 6-foot-11, Isaac has terrific lateral mobility. He’s shown the ability to switch out on the perimeter and contain smaller players while simultaneously protecting the rim from the weak side. Isaac is arguably the only player who could ultimately defend all five positions in the NBA, although he’ll need to add significant strength to do so. As a freshman, that defensive acumen paid off well as he managed to average 2.3 blocks and 1.8 steals per 40 minutes.
On offense, Isaac will likely settle in as a role-player who can space the floor a bit and attack close outs. He made 34.8 percent of his 3-point attempts this season, so there are some concerns about it translating, but if he can space the floor from a frontcourt spot, even average shooting will be valuable.
Isaac’s fit is certainly a bit questionable in Orlando with Aaron Gordon on the roster, but he fits the profile of what Hammond looked for in Milwaukee, so he slots in here with plans to figure it all out in the future.
