Detroit Tigers 25-28

Last week: 3-5
Last rank: 17

The Tigers are another dismal month away from having to begin selling off their best assets in an effort to get younger and rebuild the farm system. They were forced to make a similar move in 2015, but jumped right back into free agency the following winter. The results have not lived up to expectations on the field.

Detroit’s pitching staff is the biggest reason for the struggles. New closer Justin Wilson is going down the same path as the old closer, allowing runs in three of his first five appearances since being given the job. The two big names the Tigers added prior to the 2016 season, Jordan Zimmermann and Justin Upton have been outright disasters. J.D. Martinez should probably keep a suitcase packed. He is the biggest trade chip the Tigers have to offer.

Los Angeles Angels 28-28

Last week: 3-4
Last rank: 16

The unthinkable has happened. Mike Trout has a serious injury and will miss at least two months recovering from thumb surgery. Trout was in the midst of a historic season, and MLB will be robbed of what was shaping up to be one of the best seasons ever by a hitter.

Before hitting the disabled list, Trout was hitting .337/.461/.742 with 14 doubles, two triples, and 16 home runs. He really was taking his star to another level. The Angels have managed to keep things somewhat respectable without Trout, and Albert Pujols continues his climb towards 600 career home runs.
