2. Dallas Stars

It’s safe to say the Dallas Stars are in “win-now” mode after signing goaltender Ben Bishop and hiring Ken Hitchcock as their head coach. Looking at their roster, their blue line is feeling the losses of Alex Goligoski and Jason Demers from last offseason. The young Stars defense was overmatched and it cost them a postseason spot. If Dallas is looking for a quick fix, Chris Tanev is a great option.

This year’s free agent class doesn’t have many quality defensemen. Kevin Shattenkirk is likely staying in the Eastern Conference and Karl Alzner is coming off a sports hernia. Tanev might be a better investment than either of the two.

The Stars’ defense needs a true top pairing defenseman to pair with John Klingberg on the left side. Tanev, conveniently, is a right shot. Klingberg would definitely benefit from playing alongside a defenseman who can handle his own defensively. Moreover, Tanev would love playing next to a puck mover like him.

But there is a downside. The Stars don’t have any immediate NHL contributors to offer. But for the Canucks, that shouldn’t be an issue. Getting the number three overall pick isn’t likely, but Dallas also has the Anaheim Ducks’ first rounder. That should be a good starting point.
