If not for a surprising three-game sweep at the hands of the Padres in San Diego, the Cubs would be back in first place in the Central after handing the Cardinals a sweep of their own over the weekend. Nevertheless, the Brewers held on to the top spot in the division after splitting five games in New York and winning one of three at home against the Dodgers.
Chase Anderson, Junior Guerra, Jimmy Nelson and Zach Davies were all brilliant last week. Anderson, Guerra and Nelson combined for 21 scoreless innings. Davies allowed two runs in five innings May 30 against the Mets, and tossed six shutout innings Sunday against the Dodgers to lower his ERA from 5.44 to 4.69.
Hernan Perez and Travis Shaw tied for the team lead with eight hits during the week, and Danny Santana led the club with three home runs. Eric Thames added two long balls, including a solo shot in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Los Angeles.
