St. Louis Cardinals: Seung-hwan Oh

After briefly climbing back into first place in the NL Central, the Cardinals are back below .500 and in third place. A weak offense without a true superstar to pace the attack is holding the team back. This group has not shown enough punch to make trading from the deep farm system worthwhile for the front office.

Unless the Cardinals begin to pick it up offensively, the front office may need to consider selling a few valuable assets from the current roster. Closer Seung-hwan Oh has been solid since coming over from Japan last season. The right-hander will soon 35 and is a free agent at the end of the season. The Cardinals are likely to evaluate other internal options to replace him next season. Oh has shown vulnerability at times this season.

Oh is a veteran reliever who can handle the pressure of pitching in a pennant race and could be one of the more attractive relief options on the trade market this July. Trevor Rosenthal has made a full recovery after a poor 2016 season and could step back in as closer for the final two months of the season if Oh is moved. The Cardinals do have the prospects in the farm system to add an impact player, but that may be wasted on this year’s squad.
