Phildelphia Phillies 24-36

Watching the Phillies young starting rotation pitch this year has been painful to say the least. Vince Velasquez is on and off the DL again and Jerad Eickhoff and Aaron Nola have struggled. This is not what the Phillies expected from what appeared to be a budding core of a solid rotation.

Odubel Herrera is the latest hitter to put himself on Hunter Strickland’s hit list. Herrera loves to bat flip essentially every ball he hits in the air, and he has been able to do plenty of bat flipping the past week. The All-Star center fielder is batting .529 in June with seven doubles, two home runs, and nine RBI.

There aren’t many MLB stories more special or heart-warming than Edinson Volquez throwing a no-hitter on the birthday of former teammate and friend Yordano Ventura. Volquez has been through plenty of heartbreak during his MLB career, and famously pitched in the World Series while news was circulating that his father had died.

Volquez has quietly been turning in a very solid season for the Marlins after struggling in April. He’s no ace, but is getting the job done for the Marlins in a rotation that lacks stability after the loss of Jose Fernandez. If the Marlins plan to sell at the deadline, they will find trade partners looking to acquire Volquez.
