3. The Internet

Ah, yes, the Warriors have a 3-1 lead once again heading back to Oracle Arena. Internet, do your thing, your beautiful, beautiful thing.

No team in NBA history has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit, but one team has come back from 3-1 Finals deficit. The 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers. If you’re on social media, you’ve surely heard the signature taunt in all of its forms and glory. “The 73-9 Golden State Warriors blew a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals with the unanimous MVP.”

Yup, that’s the one.

The Internet doesn’t forget. Before the Cavaliers and Warriors even stepped foot on the floor for Game 4, social media exploded with Warriors memes. What if they were to take it a step further and blow a 3-0 lead?

The Internet would break. Not really, but if you have any presence on social media, you know what we mean. These memes consumed the Internet for the entire offseason and into the regular season. They were revived when the trilogy of Finals matches between the Cavs and the Warriors was confirmed.

Where am I going with this?

The Warriors all have a social media presence. They go out in public. Their players have been subject to and forced to endure these jokes for an entire year. We know what you’re going to say: “This is a different team, they added Kevin Durant.”

Well, for those who seem to have forgotten, Kevin Durant and the Thunder blew a 3-1 lead of their own in Western Conference Finals. Those 3-1 taunts haunted him so much he had to leave Oklahoma City. Okay, maybe that’s a stretch, but you get the point.

These jokes take a mental toll. The Warriors can only hear so many of these before they begin to question themselves. What if? The best thing for Steve Kerr to do would be to tear a page out of LeBron’s book. Zero dark thirty. Shut all of his players down from social media and isolate them as if they were the jury in a massive court case. At least until they have the title locked up.
