Is it possible the Rockies are actually getting better? Despite being a trendy Wild Card pick in spring training, few actually expected Colorado to hold onto first place in the NL West through the first eight weeks of the season, especially with the Dodgers and Diamondbacks playing great baseball during that same stretch. Nevertheless, after five wins in six games against the two teams that played in the World Series last year, the Rockies continue to pass every test offered.

The club’s pitching staff remains surprisingly strong as Kyle Freeland, Jeff Hoffman and Tyler Chatwood all posted quality outings during the week, and Greg Holland remains unhittable as closer. Meanwhile, Mark Reynolds and Charlie Blackmon show no signs of slowing down.

Colorado has an opportunity to add to its lead in the division this week with a pair of series against sub-.500 teams.
