14. Scotty doesn’t know…about Chris Paul

It can be hard for all of us to separate product from process, the what from the why. We see something happen on the basketball court and we assume the most obvious or most simple explanation is the only explanation, no matter how much evidence we have to the contrary.

Take for example the playoff foibles of Chris Paul. He’s been in exquisite in playoff series after playoff series over his career. But his team doesn’t advance and so the narrative of “Chris Paul: Human sports loser” has continued to build. For Scotty, the night, just a few weeks ago, when the Utah Jazz eliminated the Los Angeles Clippers from the Western Conference Semifinals, appeared to be an emotional breaking point.

You can tell he’s serious because the crucial points are typed in all caps. The emphasis is inescapable. However, as the playoffs continued something must of happened to Scotty because he eventually softened and all that all-caps hard-edge melted away.

Poignant stuff from Scotty. Our shared humanity is all we have to hold us together in the face of an indifferent and uncaring universe. Be well, indeed.
