4. Dustin Johnson misses the cut

By all accounts, the 2017 US Open should set up quite nicely for Dustin Johnson. He ranks No. 1 on the PGA Tour in terms of driving distance, which we’ve already discussed as being something of importance for this weekend at Erin Hills. What’s more, he’s the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world for a reason. And if that wasn’t enough, Johnson is the defending champion at the second major of the season. Subsequently, all the dominoes seem to be falling into place.

If that weren’t enough, the run that Johnson has been on this season has been nothing short of phenomenal. Johnson already has three wins to his credit this season, in addition to a second-place and a third-place finish. Additionally, he has another top-10 finish on the year. To put it simply, there’s a reason that he’s the top-ranked player in the world right now. With that being said, I’m not convinced he’s all good coming into the US Open.

The last time that Johnson played (at the Memorial Tournament), he missed the cut, which is only the second time this season that he’s done so. After that, though, he went straight to Erin Hills to start getting a feel for the unfamiliar course. That’s great and all, but to me it shows a bit of uncertainty in his game. Though he has every reason to be confident, I don’t think he is. I think he overthinks his game this week and doesn’t make it to Saturday and Sunday as he defends his championship.
