20 college football records that will never be broken
15. Consecutive carries without a fumble: Travis Prentice, 862
For his remarkable run of ball security with Miami Ohio in the late 1990s, Prentice owns a safe spot in the NCAA record books.
The Louisville native earned All-State recognition in high school before attending nearby Miami to play collegiately. After redshirting in 1995, Prentice broke into the RedHawks’ rotation as a freshman with 123 carries for 601 yards and twelve touchdowns.
From then on, Prentice would develop into a workhorse feature back with at least 296 carries, 1,349 yards and 17 touchdowns in each of his three remaining collegiate seasons to finish his career as one of the most prolific rushers in NCAA history and help Miami to one of its best stretches ever. Beyond that terrific production as a volume rusher, Prentice began a remarkable record streak of 862 carries without a fumble as a sophomore in 1997.
That ball security record is almost certain to hold up throughout college football history as even reaching Prentice’s sheer number of carries is a tall enough order for any running back in today’s game. Prentice also finished his career with a then-record 73 rushing touchdowns and 78 total scores, although Ron Dayne and Keenan Reynolds would both top those marks.
The Cleveland Browns selected Prentice in the third round of the 2000 NFL Draft, but the college legend was out of professional football three years later with just 525 yards and 10 touchdowns to his credit.
