Milwaukee Brewers 39-35

Last week: 4-3
Last rank: 12

The Brewers have the feel of a .500 team that is struggling to tread water at the top of their division while the real contenders shake off their World Series hangover. Overall, their lineup is very prone to the strikeout, just as the rotation is prone to the longball. This team has a lot of promise, but their hold on first place is very tenuous.

Domingo Santana is blossoming into a real piece to build around for the Brewers. In his first full season at the MLB level, the outfielder is hitting .264/.358/.455 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI. Santana has shown a maturing approach at the plate and is making more contact without sacrificing his power.

Chicago Cubs 36-35

Last week: 4-2
Last rank: 11

If the Cubs could avoid playing the NL West for the rest of the year, their path to the NL Central crown will be that much smoother. Chicago is 9-13 against the division this year and has yet to play the red-hot Arizona Diamondbacks.

Anthony Rizzo has taken to leading off like a duck to water. He is batting .429/.469/1.000 in his first seven games at the top of Joe Maddon’s lineup and had not made an out to start the game entering Wednesday’s game against the Padres. Maddon has really pressed the right button in installing Rizzo as his leadoff man.
