San Diego Padres 29-44

Last week: 2-4
Last rank: 29

For all their struggles as a team this year, the Padres have had the number of the World Series champion Chicago Cubs. San Diego has won four of six against the Cubbies while limiting them to 14 runs. There is no real reason to expect the Padres to experience any level of success against the champs. Baseball is just weird sometimes.

The Padres have been outscored by over 100 runs this year. One of the few bright spots has been Yangervis Solarte, but unfortunately he is headed to the DL with an oblique strain. Solarte was hitting .268/.349/.425 with 10 doubles, 10 home runs, and 40 RBI. Hopefully the injury does not keep him out long, because Solarte deserves some happiness after the tragic loss of his wife to cancer.

Cincinnati Reds 30-41

Last week: 1-5
Last rank: 22

The long and never dull career of Bronson Arroyo may finally be coming to an end. The 40-year-old right-hander is on the disabled list with a shoulder injury and has hinted that his might be it. If Arroyo never pitches in the league again, he will retire with 148 wins, an All-Star nod, a Gold Glove, a World Series ring.

That Arroyo was even able to make 14 starts for the Reds tells you everything you need to know about their pitching staff. Even with a fairly dominant bullpen, Cincinnati is last in the National League with a 5.03 ERA. Their offense is good, but not that good.
