Miami Marlins 32-38

Last week: 3-3
Last rank: 25

The Marlins are viewed by some as a potential seller at the trade deadline — why? Not accounting for the silliness that can come with being owned by Jeffrey Loria, there is no reason for the Marlins to abandon their young core. Miami has six potential All-Stars, on team-friendly contracts, that make them one of the most exciting teams to watch on a nightly basis.

Pitching is the problem, but that was already well known entering the regular season. It is hard to address that weakness without being willing to spend money, and the Marlins gamble on Wei-Yin Chen could scare Loria off from future free agents. If the owner really wants to build a winner behind the likes of Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna, Christian Yelich, Dee Gordon, and Justin Bour, he can. Instead, he will probably focus on selling the team and stripping it down to the studs.

Chicago White Sox 31-39

Last week: 3-3
Last rank: 24

At 26, Matt Davidson does not have the typical rookie profile, but he maintained his rookie status heading into 2017. Primarily a DH, Davidson has been a great find for the White Sox. He made his debut back in 2013 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and got in 31 games that year with three home runs. It would take over three years for Davidson to get himself into a full-time MLB job.

Davidson has 16 home runs and a .867 OPS on the year. It is definitely too early to tell if he is destined for sustained success at the MLB level, but pitchers have yet to figure him out. Either way, Davidson has emerged as one of the better stories of the season.
