Toronto FC: Shaan Hundal

Toronto FC have, by consensus, the best depth in MLS. Greg Vanney said it, and even without deep knowledge of the league’s history, it’s probably a pretty reasonable assertion. During a six-game winning streak in April and May, Toronto had to rotate their squad a lot with midweek games, and we saw players like Raheem Edwards, Tosaint Ricketts and Benoit Cheyrou step up off the bench.

This depth comes predominantly from academy and locally-grown players. When starters like Victor Vazquez or Steven Beitashour need rests, or are unavailable for a week, TFC are able to to pull a Marky Delgado or Jay Chapman or Jordan Hamilton off the bench, a strength rarely seen anywhere in MLS today or in the past.

Despite this, Toronto don’t have a single U-20 player on the active roster, which appears to be nothing more than a coincidence considering they have nine U-23 players and five Homegrown players. As a result, to pick the best 20 and under player, we had to look to TFCII, their USL reserve club. There, we find talented forward Shaan Hundal.

Hundal, just 17, was ranked 13th on the USL 20 Under 20 list referenced earlier, and was compared to Sergio Aguero in a Top Drawer Soccer scouting report. TDS said, “At least in playing style, he bears some similarity to the Manchester City luminary, all quickness and quality around the final third … Toronto FC, which has been known for bringing along quality forwards, has a good one on its hands.”
