NBA Free Agency 2017: 5 offseason targets for the Brooklyn Nets
3. Danilo Gallinari
The same logic that the Nets should employ in pursuit of J.J. Redick should also apply to Gallinari: add a proven veteran that improves the team in the short-term, but doesn’t hinder future cap flexibility. Gallo turns 29 in a few months, so he will probably be more costly than Redick just because of their substantial age difference. He would however provide the Nets with a more versatile skillset than Redick.
While Trevor Booker had a solid year playing the four spot, bringing Gallinari on board would unlock new offensive looks for Brooklyn. The Nets haven’t had a guy quite like Gallinari spacing the floor from the four spot. Bogdonavic played some power forward minutes for the Nets last season, but Gallo is better on both ends of the floor.
Although Gallinari can’t hold up at power forward against many teams, he’s big, sturdy and competes. On offense he provides a dynamism that the Nets have sorely lacked. Gallo is an excellent driver and shooter, that gets to the line consistently. Brooklyn ranked seventh in the NBA in free throw attempts per game last year, so he would improve one of the team’s relatively few offensive strengths. Gallo could be the centerpiece of some fun, stretchy lineups next year if he joins the Nets. Overpaying him on a short deal could really help Brooklyn.
